Busy, busy...

October 27th:

So busy around here, people scurrying about...making lots of noise, and...just being here..in my yard...Of course I knew it would be like this, and of course I know it's absolutely necessary, after all, I don't expect magical creatures to appear and silently build our house.
I've been spending countless hours online shopping for lighting, bathroom fixtures, appliances, and window treatments...I'm just sure that there's a better deal out there somewhere, and I have found some really great things that I would never have got in my local stores.  But, this online shopping is so time consuming because there are so many stores to shop in, and I'm running out of time!!  On Tuesday Chris asked me for the shower fixtures (my responsibility), and I had to say that I hadn't bought them yet, I've been spending all my time shopping for lighting.  Since the drywall guy is coming soon Chris needs to do the plumbing, I have the bathroom sinks and faucets purchased, but he doesn't need those yet... so I had to drop what I was doing and run off to Erie to get what he did need, and I ended up paying way more than I wanted to pay to get what I wanted for the master bath shower....
The lesson I have learned is that sometimes you just need to accept what's being offered.  My constant quest for the best bargain I can find has made me fall behind on other duties, which just adds to my high anxiety...
So, I'm making purchases and moving on ....

October 28th:

Wow...quiet here today!  No compressor running right outside my door, I can actually hear the wind chimes!  The roof appears to be finished, so just Chris and his crew are here.  To bad, today is windy and cold, and I know that Chris would like to get the house sealed up so they don't have those blustery winds constantly blowing through the house.
The way the house is positioned, and with all those windows, is perfect for catching the breeze...I doubt that we will have to use the air conditioning very often!
Gotta go...this morning I'm going to try to clean up some of the mud that gets dragged into the house!

BAD, BAD, rodents!!

October 23rd:
Once upon a time, long, long ago, my brother Mel asked Rod and I if we would be interested in buying a brand new Peachtree French door at a ridiculously low price.  Someone had ordered two doors from Agway where Mel also bought his building supplies from, then they had changed their minds and Agway was willing to sell the doors to Mel for $500 each.  Mel bought one, and we bought the other, although we had no plans of using the door in the near future.  The door has been in the box it came in and stored in the barn all these years since.  When we decided to build the house we planned to use the Peachtree door in the Master bedroom.  Soooo...a few days ago the guys were ready to install the door and went to the barn get it, a little while later Chris Fuller told me he had something to show me... they took me to the master bedroom where the door was laying on the floor, they lifted it up, and showed me this:

While stored in the barn, a critter had been enjoying the taste of our Peachtree door!!

Well, I wasn't inclined to abandon the door because of this.  The damage was on the inside of the door and had no effect on the installation of the door, it was being installed in our bedroom where it will seldom be seen, and the clincher for me was when Chris told me that to replace it would cost $2000.  So, the door was installed and I'll try some repair products I saw in a woodworking magazine and try to fix it before it gets stained.
That's why this post is titled, "Bad,Bad, rodents!"

 October 25th:
Monday morning...the shingles are delivered and the guys who are installing the shingles and siding get started.  Chris Fuller and his guys spend the day installing septic and water lines.

The house gets a hat...

October 20th:

starting to build the cap.

Trimming the edges.
October 22nd:
There hasn't been so much to take a picture of these past few days, the progress being made is inside and not as much of a visible difference.  For instance, the boxes for the light switches and outlets are installed, while that took a lot of discussion and planning, I doubt that anyone really wants to see a picture of all those little blue boxes!  Next week the siding and shingles will start going on if the weather permits.

Not the patio door ...but, I'm sure that will soon be in place too!

Sorry to those of you who will miss the smiley face that was in the Tyvek that covered the window!  Hopefully I'll see YOUR smiley face looking out that window one day?!?!

Whew! Things are really moving along...

October 18th:
I met with a kitchen designer today, my second and last.  Now they can duke it out, let the lowest priced one win!  I came home and the garage roof was on and a lot of the plywood was on the roof of the house!

Chris Fuller was here this afternoon with his 90 yr. old dad, who is retired now but still enjoys hanging out with Chris.  Harley loves him! He carries dog treats in his pocket, so Harley follows him everywhere...

Talked with Chris for a long time, there is so much to make decisions on, it's quite overwhelming..

Plumbing and electrical begins on Wednesday...

Windows and doors were delivered today, love them!

The roof system.

I wandered into the house Saturday morning and decided to take pictures of the roof system, amazing to think that this all went into place in two days.

This is the center column, the main support for the roof that you saw being built in pictures in earlier posts.

Another view of the main support.

Looks complex.

Five days with the framer's.(sounds like a song title!)

October 15th:

Amazing what these guys have acomplished in five days, I couldn't be more pleased with them.  Not only are they hard, skilled workers, but they're also really nice guys!  The following pictures will show the fnished trusses and the beginning of the plywood sheeting going on.  The whole roof project has been nerve racking for me, especially when very strong wind gusts began yesterday afternoon and those guys were up there so high.

see the smiley face?

The wind presented a big problem for me in my furniture re-finishing canopy when around 3:15 I observed the whole canopy slide about 1' across the ground.  I had just finished sanding the last piece to refinish and was getting ready to put the first coat of polyurethane on it, I was just standing there, brush in hand, thinking about how windy it had become when I saw the canopy move.  The tarps on the sides of the canopy were catching the wind, so I raced around taking those down first, then moved everything I could move alone out of there so that when Chris came home from school he could help me lower the canopy by removing the legs. We did get the canopy lowered, but not without a few mishaps, the worse one being... Aargh.. I said I was going to let it go---deep breath---- let's just say that the antique Birds Eye Maple dresser no longer has a mirror--- I won't say how that came about, because I'm trying to--let.. it.. go.. While picking up all the broken glass, I noticed that the dresser was made in 1931...is that a bright side?... sigh ...

Good thing I'm short! Under there is the last piece to be finished, then I'll clean the canopy and tomorrow when Rod is home, we'll take it down and pack 'er away!  Can't wait!

A whole bunch of pictures..

October 13th:

Chris is standing in the kitchen!

 October 14th:

Today the roof trusses started going up, here are a lot pictures of a small part of that process, from different angles.  Taking into consideration that no one has ever built a round house...it sure is moving along nicely.  It did make me very nervous watching them walk along the edge of the building so far off the ground!  I've managed to bite my tongue and only once begged them to be careful- as if they would be careless- but...you know, it makes me nervous ..
                                            So, here are the pictures...

The first ten pictures are of the process of lifting one truss into place.

The next truss is waiting to be lifted into place.

The first delivery, another truck load arrived not long after I took this picture.

A view from the field..that bright blue potty sure stands out, doesn't it?

By the end of the day you can see how well this crew works together, they get an amazing amount of work done..
And now for the best picture of the day...
